Remembrance Service

Everyone joined together at 11am on Armistice Day to remember the price that was paid through war, to give us the freedom we have today in Britain. The first World War began on 28th July 1914 and did not end until the guns fell silent on 11th November 1918, by which time millions had died. In Britain nine million service men and woman lost their lives in this war alone. We remember their sacrifice and we are thankful that they left behind a country where we can go to school rather than to war, and where we can study rather than fight, but we remember the hundreds of thousands who died: who had their lives cut short and we owe it to them to make the most of our opportunities:

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,

Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted

They fell with their faces to the foe

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, not the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

From 'For the Fallen' by Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)
